Skype has finally released the much anticipated update for their popular iPhone VoIP calling application, adding native support for VoIP calls over the iPhone 3G data connection. The updated Skype iPhone will remain free through the end of 2010, and can be downloaded via the Apple App Store.

Skype for iPhone reports “near CD-quality sound” for on-network, Skype to Skype calls on the iPhone 3GS and 2nd Generation or newer iPod Touch.

From the Skype press release:

The new version features an enhanced call quality indicator, which will help you choose the best moment to call. We’ve made the app speedier to start up, and given you rapid access to the dial pad from the home screen – all in all, making it quicker for you to get from click to chatter.

Please remember that VoIP services always needs about 100 kbit/s stable bandwith. In case of big GPRS areas I would prefer a PBX calltrough or callback solution instead of a real VoIP softphone.
